My whole adult working life has been spent in the renovation industry and there wouldn’t be any scenario I haven’t come across and used my unique skills and experience to deliver the ultimate vision my many happy customers have demanded.
But, I must warn you; I’m not your average construction industry builder or tradesman.
I know what you’re thinking, he might say he’s an expert renovator, but they’re all the same. Unreliable, hard to contact, only turns up when he feels like it, and finds every reason to charge more than was originally quoted.
Hey, I wouldn’t blame you!
We’ve all experienced it, even me… and you know what? It ticks me off as much as it does you trying to understand how some tradies and businesses survive. It’s like… who knows what they think, it’s not good enough.
You see, I was brought up in a small country town in the wheat and sheep belt of NSW. It was a town where you wouldn’t last long if you didn’t have a strong work ethic, and community values of honesty, trust and integrity.
A handshake was your word, if you made a promise or commitment you’d see it through.
From the age of 12 when I built up a small lawn mowing run, through to working part time in the local hardware store and helping my father in the shearing sheds, the ethics and principles I live by were instilled into my psyche and have never waivered.
After learning my trade at age 23, I left home heading for Brisbane, ended up hijacked by a cousin of mine who talked me into venturing to ‘the big smoke’. So within a week, Sydney became my home and I landed a job with a building company specializing in bathroom and kitchen renovations.
It wasn’t long before I worked my way up to foreman or site manager, whatever you call it I was handed much more responsibility.
I’d noticed people’s standards weren’t as high as I was used to, but I tell you what… once I was in a position where I had to organize trades and staff my jaw dropped and the realization set in… I was no longer in a small town where your reputation was everything.
I can’t tell you how many times I was let down by tradies who just didn’t give a damn.
In fact, the boss wasn’t much better. Jobs ran overtime, customers got cranky and as much as I tried, it was like… if they want it done, it will be done when we get there and if they have to wait, they wait.
After that experience, I began subcontracting to builders and larger companies, which gave me a lot of valuable experience on the tools and project management which definitely helped me develop my craft, but it was still a lot of the same old, same old attitude.
People in the building industry didn’t seem to care about anything but making money and burning whoever they could on the way. The industry saying was, “quote it cheap to get the job, and make up the balance on the extra’s”. Sometimes ‘the extra’s’ amounted to more than was originally quoted.
I ‘did my time’, got the skills and practical experience I needed and after a few years in their world, I thought ‘bugger them’ I’m going to establish my own business… focusing on service and the values I was brought up with.
I’d only employ like-minded people who shared my vision and ethics, and change the landscape in my favour.
Don’t get me wrong, that was still much tougher than I thought. I toughed it out though, hiring and firing until I put together a team I was proud of.
Initially, we concentrated on kitchen renovations. As my team matured and our processes ran like clockwork, we expanded into bathrooms, wardrobes, structural renovations and even commercial shop fitting.
It was during this time I married my sweetheart who shared my teams vision and values, Samantha.
This business thrived and kept growing as a result of the team of reliable, honest staff members and trades who treated our customers like family, and gave the level of commitment they too would expect.
Finally, renovators in Sydney had a true-blue fair dinkum company that delivered on their promises and commitments… every time.
After 18 years in Sydney it was time to trek north to Brisbane, where I was originally heading, away from the stress and frantic lifestyle that was taking it’s toll.
No sooner had we made the decision, it was like the gods were listening. I hadn’t even listed the business for sale when I received an approach from an investor who liked what I had built and could see the future potential built on solid foundations.
So, off we set to Queensland, quickly found a place to call home and set about building our dream home. We wanted a new life without the hustle and bustle.
Lo and behold, I found the building industry was no different up here from what I’d experienced in Sydney…
Tradesmen who made times and never turned up, others who wouldn’t even return a quote, shoddy workmanship they refused to fix, they left a mess and still had the hide to hit me up for variations they hadn’t allowed for.
Noooooooo…….. not again!!!
I instinctively knew what I had to do. I looked at my wife and without a word being uttered, she nodded.
Our tropical Queensland semi-retirement was no longer.
Over the next couple of months, I obtained my Queensland licenses and insurances, and set out to find the best, the most professional and the most reliable tradesmen I could find. Licensed, honest, and trustworthy with a stellar work ethic, I found them all.
